THE POP CHAIR

The flatpack chair, a staple of Danish design innovation, is meant to be disassembled and shipped flat in a box. How can I reimagine it my way?

The Concept.

As a college student used to building my own furniture with not much more than an allen key and a confusing instruction manual, I wanted to reimagine how furniture can be shipped flat in a box, while also arriving fully assembled. With this design, I wanted to get the best of both worlds.

Constructed with Birch plywood and natural leather, as you settle into the chair the leather naturally flexes and supports the user. With these natural materials, as they age, they will develop a beautiful patina over time.

How can I make a flatpackable chair without requiring assembly? How can a chair be collapsible but also stable? What materials can I use instead of metal hardware to accomplish these goals?

How can this design solution be seamless and elegant?

Through cardboard modeling, I explored how I could create a hinge down the middle of the chair.
